Sunday 26th March 2017 – Fir Water
Apologies as my Sunday Match Report is a little late this week following a well deserved weekend in the Lake District. This week 20 anglers from Leyland Angling Club fished Fir Water in what turned out to be the first of the early Spring sunshine. Despite this, the lake still provided some mixed fishing conditions with one end bathed in glorious sunshine and not a ripple to be seen all day, whilst at the far end, a strong and blustery wind made it hard for the anglers to present the bait.
With very similar weights to the previous weekend, Liam Fell secured victory with a weight of 48-4-0 from peg 18. Some of the lads including Liam had fished the lake earlier in the year and realised then the potential in targeting the large head of Ide. Liam followed this up by simply fishing maggot and using up in the water tactics for a net that was made up predominantly of small to medium sized Ide and other silvers. This was closely followed by John Howarth with a weight of 42-10-0 who like Liam, set his stall out by fishing maggot and corn up in the water to target the Ide. Third this week was Dave Lancaster who was just shy of 40lb with a weight of 39-15-0 from the top end of the lake on peg 22. Dave again targeted the large head of Ide fishing towards the island on corn and maggot. Interestingly, after speaking to the match organiser Andy he explained that most of the lads had deliberately set their stall out to target the large head of Ide and Skimmers in the lake and had not really considered the Carp as they still felt it was too a little early in the season.
Thank you to the lads from Leyland Angling Club and we hope to see you soon. Here are the top 3 weights from Sunday:
1, Liam Fell – Peg 18 – 48-4-0
2, John Howarth – Peg 20 – 42-10-0
3, Dave Lancaster – Peg 22 – 39-15-0
